MA’De in Brunel ++ brand or show? show or brand?

It is an interesting reflection that innovation – as in the process of making it happen – can really capture the energy and enthusiam of people and organisations. Degree shows are a bit like that. We all work to a moment in time and then it is over….. or at least we think its over. A Degree show at one level is the launch of a product, in this case the work and careers of students. But actually it is also part of a brand building exercise. If the brand of the College or University is built then the next Degree show will have broader impact and reputation generally will grow and so on. The same is true for Brand Building in general. That there is an intimate and essential link between products (services) and brands. So don’t forget that effort is also required after the event?

The Exhibition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the past several days rather months the rant about the exhibition has been going on. We haven’t slept in days, have been working crazy hours, putting up a show, running around crazy etc. Now alls done, now what? In 3 days, the exhibition ends, the excitement of the past few months materializes in these 3 major days…

Exhibitions are funny…They really are, last year I exhibited at 3 different exhibitions met lots of people, got a couple of business cards, networked, looked around…worked like crazy and then it was over, just like that! The fun, the thrill was being able to show the world my work. An exhibition is a space where you exhibit a part of your self esp. at art or design exhibitions…we as designers put our soul into our work, only to sell it later?

Its about making statements, about showing the world that I exist, that my work holds meaning…The work represents me and speaks for me, in places and times where I go silent, you see things through my work…but the problem comes when people try and find logic out of it, ahh I know what this is, its an apple! Yeah right! but do you necessarily have to spoil the fun? Is a connection so important? its past mid-night and I m sitting here blogging before the exhibition opens tomorrow morning…I can’t sleep due to the excitement and anxiety…

Tomorrow is a day where I brand myself and say what?

http://www.madeinbrunel.com/show/

The MA DESIGN STRATEGY class of 2008 will be exhibiting 3 types of Design Research work at the exhibition:

  • Our suggestions and interpretations of the future of Design. Design Futures Presentations by the class of 2008. So what is the future of Design? Rather, how can design help shape the future? Will Design be a part of the future? Is Design the future??? These are some of the questions that our presentations address. The inspiring ideas in these presentations, show you a glimpse of the future. Get ready to witness the future at MADE in BRUNEL.

  • The virtual web secondlife exhibition, showcasing work of 42 dynamic MA Design Strategy students. The exhibition will show the depth and variety of work done at masters level at Brunel. It will also highlight the creative talents of our postgraduate students. On the virtual exhibition you get to meet one of the SHEAL team’s representative (available there throughout the exhibition to answer questions, help guide you throughout the space etc.). On the secondlife exhibition we even have MAde in Brunel exhibition books for you to take away. Isambard Island has been transformed into an imaginative and fantastic exhibition space by the MA Secondlife team with help and guidance from Dr. Olinkha Gustafson-Pearce.

  • Selected Printed work of MA Design Strategy students from the Design Research Posters. The posters are a visualization of the students design research projects. Each project is different and encompasses a breadth of ideas and questions the future of Design globally. The class of 2007/08 comprises of students from various nationalities and cultures. This mix of identities has given rise to greater inspiration in the work.

We look forward to showing you the world through our eyes. Come to our exhibition and witness the power of DESIGN!
